2026-08-24 16:20

The economy of Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (Beijing E-Town) expanded 6.1% year on year to 196.78 billion yuan ($29.27 billion) in the first half of 2026. Total industrial output neared 360 billion yuan, while total imports and exports reached 118.85 billion yuan, an increase of 33.8%, with exports rising 59.1% to 50.02 billion yuan and imports increasing 20% to 68.83 billion yuan.

Behind the strong performance lie Beijing E-Town's dynamic high-end industrial clusters, accelerated major projects and high-level opening-up.

The four leading industries, including new-generation information technology, biotechnology and healthcare, high-end and new energy intelligent vehicles, and robotics and intelligent manufacturing, have accounted for more than 90% of Beijing E-Town's total industrial output. Notably, the new-generation information technology and robotics sectors rose 37.5% and 12.3% respectively.

Meanwhile, future industries including quantum information, biomanufacturing, fusion energy, brain science and brain-computer interfaces, embodied intelligence and 6G communications are gaining steady momentum. With innovation facilities having gone into operation, Beijing's first token factory has a daily token production capacity of more than 1.4 trillion, supporting over 600 AI companies in the district. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region's first 10,000-unit embodied intelligence super factory is also accelerating production, with 10,000 humanoid robots expected to roll off its production lines this year.

From January to May, Beijing E-Town's information and sci-tech services maintained steady growth, with investment of large and medium enterprises jumping nearly 30% and 13 sets of major technological equipment being added.

Major industrial projects are advancing steadily to consolidate Beijing E-Town's long-term development foundation. Fixed-asset investment increased by more than 10% in the first half this year, with industrial investment accounting for over 80% of the total.

Sanofi's insulin active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) project, with an investment of about 1 billion euros, became the first biologic API production base of a multinational pharmaceutical firm in China. Meanwhile, the R&D transformation base of International Pharmaceutical Innovation Park has also started construction, while the second phase of the Modulus OPC Community is progressing to accommodate AIGC, intelligent agent development and smart hardware companies. Construction of Phase III of the Beijing Tongren Hospital Yizhuang Campus has also begun, with 400 planned beds to expand high-quality medical supply in southeastern Beijing.

Deeper opening-up has also injected strong impetus into foreign trade, with more "Made in E-Town" products entering global markets. IAT Automobile Technology is providing overseas customers with integrated services covering vehicle R&D, supply chains and vehicle exports. GE Healthcare's Beijing base has launched its first lights-out production line for CT components, with over 60% of its CT equipment exported worldwide and cumulative shipments reaching a milestone of 200,000 units.
