Beijing Rolls Out Infrastructure Plan through 2025

2022-05-17 14:25

Beijing plans to build a comprehensive, efficient, environment-friendly, and reliable infrastructure system in the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), according to a development plan the city issued last Thursday.

The city plans to expand its rail transit network from 1,092 kilometers to 1,600 kilometers by the year 2025, with 600 kilometers in the suburban area, said Wu Shijiang, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport.

Meanwhile, it will aim for a two-hour transportation circle in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei city cluster and a one-hour commute circle within Beijing.

The Chinese capital will also promote green and sustainable transportation. It will build pedestrian and bicycle networks, aiming to increase the rate of environment-friendly transportation to 76.5% in the city's central area, according to the plan.

Beijing will stick to the principle of green development, and continue to promote emissions reduction in infrastructure, said Lai Xianyu, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform. The city will control its energy consumption at around a coal equivalent of 80.5 million metric tons during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

Thursday's plan also lays out ecological targets for the next four years. Beijing will increase its forest coverage rate to 45% and aim for a per capita green space of 16.7 square meters in the urban area. The wetland protection rate will reach 70% by 2025.
