Beijing to Build Itself into an International Consumption Center City: 22 Traditional Business Districts to be Upgraded before the End of This Year

From January to October this year, 52 business districts in Beijing have registered a total retail sales of CNY 228.1 billion, a year-on-year increase of 37%.

Upgrading and transforming traditional shopping malls

As a response to a series of problems faced by traditional shopping malls such as the aging of facilities and the obsolete business forms that need urgent adjustment, Beijing starts the upgrading and transformation of traditional shopping malls from pilot shopping malls and adopts the principle of "tailored policy for each mall" to promote the consumption upgrading and meet the demands of the general public. In 2019, 10 shopping malls including Wangfujing Department Store and Changan Market were designated as the first batch of pilot malls. Moreover, 5 shopping malls including Caishikou Department Store in Xicheng District were listed as pilot shopping malls in 2020, and 10 including MARKOR C.A.V.E in 2021. Among these 25 pilot shopping malls, 16 such as Changan Market have basically completed their upgrading and transformation and their business performance has been greatly improved.     

Piloting the sales of medicinal products through cross-border E-commerce

E-commerce, as a new business model and form that has flourished in recent years, has played a vital role in ensuring supply and stimulating consumption and has become an important lever for Beijing to build itself into an international consumption center city. From January to October this year, the online retail sales of Beijing reached CNY 412.8 billion, up 22.8 % year-on-year, accounting for 34.5% of the total retail sales of consumer goods and contributing 7.2 percentage points to the growth of the total retail sales of consumer goods. In terms of the sales of medicinal products through cross-border E-commerce, in the first three quarters of 2021, Beijing, as China's first pilot city, has achieved a sales volume of 3.5 times that of 2020.   

Building and upgrading convenience commercial outlets

Since the beginning of this year, Beijing has taken firm steps to improve the consumer services industry. According to the statistics, Beijing has built and upgraded 567 basic convenience commercial outlets of various types in the first three quarters of this year to meet the residents' needs accurately. As of now, around 90,000 convenience commercial outlets have been set up in Beijing, covering 8 major types including vegetable retailers, convenience stores, breakfast restaurants and housekeeping institutions, among which around 63,000 outlets are active in business. Through the integration of online and offline business models, these commercial outlets have basically realized a full coverage of convenience commercial services in the urban communities of Beijing.
