The renovation project of Xi’anmen Street was completed on November 29. The street has a new look now. From Fuyou Street in the east to Xisi South Street in the west, the 800-meter-long street was once an important passage connecting the inside and outside of the Forbidden City. Today, it becomes an important street that showcases the traditional style of the ancient capital.
The renovation project of Xi’anmen Street started in April this year. To reduce traffic congestion, 183 car stop posts are rearranged on the sidewalks on both sides of the street, champagne-colored railings are set up to demarcate the boundary between lanes for motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles, and electronic fences for shared bicycles are also in place. Xi’anmen Street becomes a quiet area with smooth traffic.
As Xi’anmen Street was built in the Yuan Dynasty and there is rich historical heritage left in each period, the renovation project aims to reproduce the historical scenes of various periods. At present, buildings of various periods and traditional siheyuans along the street are restored to their former glory. Walking on the street is like visiting an open urban architecture museum.
The renovation project also takes basic needs of local people into consideration. After the renovation, two culture-themed businesses remain on the street. Meanwhile, seven green spaces with a total area of approximately 406 square meters have been built, which enhance the vitality of the neighborhood.
