The renovation project of the public area around Xuanwumen Subway Station was approved by Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission recently. With an area of 14600 square meters, the project is located at the intersection of Xuanwumennei Street and Xuanwumenwai Street, and Xuanwumen East Street and Xuanwumen West Street. As a pilot project of the renovation and improvement of urban public areas, it aims to comprehensively utilize subway stations and the surrounding areas, and organically integrate transportation facilities with other urban facilities.

Compared with previous renovation projects, the project at Xuanwumen Subway Station features many innovations. To design public spaces in an overall way, the project will connect the northeast entrance and exit of the station with the green space of a nearby park, providing public area as large as possible.

To optimize traffic flow, the project will improve bicycle parking facilities in the idle space after the renovation of the southeast exit of the subway station, and manage shared bicycles by setting up electronic fences, so that citizens can enjoy the "last-mile" transportation services.

To add spaces for leisure life, the project will increase the pedestrian walkway to 3.5 meters in width, and set up facilities for a rest. Moreover, it will add activity areas for the elderly and entertainment areas for children, and set up fitness facilities and leisure seats. In addition, a variety of green plants will be planted.
