The scale of the medical and health industry in Beijing was doubled in H1 2021 on a yearly basis. As a firm support to Beijing's ambition of developong high-end, precision, and sophisticated industries to achieve a modern economic structure, medical & health and information technology are becoming the "twin engines" that boosts innovative development of Beijing-based industries. 

According to Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Director of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Administrative Committee of Zhongguancun Science Park Xu Qiang, 27 pharmaceutical enterprises have gone public since 2018, so there are a total of 61 listed pharmaceutical enterprises in Beijing. Meanwhile, innovation achievements have constantly been made, for example, in Beijing there were seven innovative drugs approved for sales and seven medical AI instruments (Category III) approved for sales, accounting for about half of China's total and taking the lead in China. 

Xu Qiang noted that the medical and health industry in Beijing would be developed in three years to realize a revenue of more than CNY 300 billion by 2023. It will also explore to make originality-based breakthroughs in frontier domains such as life science, and bring in at least 10,000 innovation talents at different levels. In addition, there will be 90 applications for sales approval of innovative drugs and innovative medical instruments, 25 new listed enterprises, and one or two international first-class research-oriented hospitals. 

In Beijing, the medical and health industry has been developed with the geographical layout from south to north. To be precise, Haidian District and Changping District in the north of Beijing are stepping up the commercialization of frontier innovation projects and the construction of professional incubators, whereas the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area and Daxing District in the south of Beijing are prioritizing the availability of industrial space, and accelerating the construction of standard factories to actively preparing for industrialization of technological innovation achievements from the north part of Beijing and even from across the word.
